This is how fungi maintain healthy soil and plants

Fungi play a big part in maintaining soil and plant health, forming intricate relationships that contribute to nutrient cycling, soil structure, and overall ecosystem resilience. These diverse and often symbiotic interactions are essential for sustaining the vitality of both plants and the surrounding soil environment.

Mycorrhizal fungi, for instance, establish mutualistic associations with the roots of most plants. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are widespread and beneficial. These fungi extend their hyphal networks into the soil, significantly expanding the plant's reach for nutrients, especially phosphorus and nitrogen. In return, the plant provides the fungi with sugars produced through photosynthesis. This symbiotic relationship enhances nutrient uptake efficiency, promoting plant growth and overall health.

Fungi also contribute to soil structure by producing hyphae that create a network known as the "mycelium." This mycelial network acts like a glue, binding soil particles together and forming aggregates. These aggregates improve soil porosity, water retention, and aeration, creating a conducive environment for root growth and nutrient diffusion. Additionally, fungal hyphae can penetrate compacted soils, alleviating issues related to soil compaction and promoting better root development.

Furthermore, certain fungi exhibit biocontrol properties by acting as natural defences to soil-borne pathogens. For example, mycoparasitic fungi prey on harmful plant pathogens, helping to control diseases and maintain a balanced and healthy soil ecosystem.

In the decomposition of organic matter, saprophytic fungi play a vital role. They break down complex organic compounds into simpler forms, releasing nutrients back into the soil. This decomposition process not only recycles nutrients but also contributes to the development of organic humus, enhancing soil fertility.

Fungi form integral components of a holistic soil-plant ecosystem. From nutrient cycling to soil structure improvement and disease suppression, their diverse roles underscore the importance of fungal contributions to sustaining soil and plant health.
